We think about territory, a central figure in our identity landscape, in a potential state of rupture. It is made of unquestioned assumptions that shape and organize societies and cultures and continues to legitimate Western power structures. Culture, ethnicity and religion is still used as markers of difference that create insiders/us against outsiders/others. We are looking for the possibilities that one can find in transcending one territory towards another and the potential for dislocating the line.

The title of the exhibition Beyond one’s own territory is in direct reference to Edward Said’s Book Orientalism. In this ground-breaking work he unfolds the power of the imagination which has driven European writers, scholars and missionaries to create the “orient” a loosely defined geographical space, that has been filled with all sorts of ideas, images, values and presumed knowledge, to construct occidental superiority and rationality. In borrowing his words, we wanted to translate some of his ideas into something more tangible and immediate. The term territory has allowed us to explore a multitude of questions relative to space, place, political power, culture and identity. Now, more than ever “territories” symbolize contested spaces and concepts we want to address. The works exhibited reflect the multitude of approaches that can be tied to the notion of territory.

In David Wittinghofer’s work, points of reference are gone and questions of boundaries are raised by “the earth” where “a map of the earth has been emptied of its content, revealing only the imaginary lines that witness man’s desire to show the entire surface of the earth on one sheet of paper”. This stands in contrast with the work by artist Anna Weichselbraun, entitled “artificial borders”, where she draws the demarcation line of the Viennese district where she lives with bicycle tubes, annexing a territory as her property, only to ball up the 5940m tubes. Both pieces make us think about the power of lines that have been drawn in history to delimit territories, binding generations to geographical reality that may not be theirs. Sven Bergelt’s 25,5h video-loop depicts the negotiation process that leads to the creation of a material border, slowly incorporated by the soil, changing and influencing the landscape. Christina Romirer’s concrete bollards which transform the gallery space into an obstacle course, forcing the visitors to change direction.

In a landscape of identity, how does space or lines symbolize territory? “We didn’t cross the border, the border crossed us” a Mexican immigrant rights movement’s slogan read. Where do I stand and what does it mean to be in between territories that sometimes feel incompatible? Questions that echo in the works of Keymea Yazdanian and Natali Glisic on the micro-level of individual experiences in relation to society. “Radius” a video-loop by Laurien Bachmann also addresses questions of belonging and identity in the context of the seemingly insurmountable landscapes of the Alps. In a landscape of identity, what role does the body play? We found this depicted in a beautiful yet disturbing way by the drawings “hautgout lust” of Carolin Richter, and her sculptures were bodyparts and bones are dissected and consolidated that may stay unidentified.

The potential state of rupture that questions attributions given by society is represented in the lonesome cowboy from Nora Jacobs, who symbolizes the gate keeper of a territory, that for us, finds its tragic counterpart in the lone wolf, a depoliticized white man that kills his fellow citizens. Highly politicized questions of security, surveillance and power represent another facet intrinsically related to territory. It’s Enar de Dios Rodríguez’ work that succeeds in expressing the malaise with the powerful voice (Vladimir Lucien) and works (Derek Wallcot) of Caribbean poets and Forensic Oceanography that calls us to account for the two-fold moral standards we live by in Europe. Radical perspectives on identity, ethnicity, politics and feminism are offered by the CRX Collective, that show their collaborative works in a wall-based-catalogue. Stating that things do not seem to go in the right direction, we were looking for potential and possibilities to think of new perspectives and to“dislocate the line”. How can we think of space not as homogeneous but as something fragmented, simultaneous, constantly moving, re-shaping and evolving as we see in Gregor Graf’s “Mauern und Zäune” or Albin Schuttings’ works of Buses and Thuja Hedges, where shifting perspectives between here and there co-exist. What would happen if we could have another chance to create our world. The video-novel “Life is a bitch” (Bogdan Armanu & Silvia Amancei) makes us dream of a potential new opportunity to create a common future. But where to start? Following the French philosopher Alain Badiou, art should produce new content, new visions of the world. The aim set for the current project from Alt Går Bra Collective “The Norwegian Republic”. In three moments, survey, assembly and publication, the Norwegian population is invited to debate political and social issues, a re-enactment of the Athenian Assemblies. Similarly we see Martin Weichselbaumers Gartenzaungespräche, an interactive installation from within the smallest territory of the Austrian citizen, the parcel of his garden house. Borders are symbolized by fences that separate “mine” from “theirs” and they are seldomly overstepped. For this occasion visitors will have the possibility to enter the garden and are invited to reflect on the world.

The art of drawing lines with bodies, through bodies, occupying space can be experienced through Inge Gappmaier’s installation. “lines.”, playing with the creation and dissolution of space trough structures, rules, lines and points. In this three-dimensional space the visitor has the chance to experience him.her.self being surrounded by volatile demarcations.
